Cesis is in the Latvian heartland, one hour from Riga, rich in natural resources and cultural heritage. The upsurgance of interest in Middle European mediaeval culture has really put the place on the map. A must is the annual beer fest, which takes place each July, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. Riga Street, the main thoroughfare, dates from the 13th century. The historic and beautiful castle was a stronghold of the Livonian knights, as well as being the scene of an emblematic toppling of Lenin’s statue in 1991. A popular centre for rest and recreation, Cesis offers a myriad of small guest houses, known as bath houses, usually situated by springs or lakes in gorgeous woodland. Particularly lovely is the Gauja valley with its holy spring and cave.
